Musings

written by Chris Mereschuk

No one can tame the tongue. We use it to say, “Praised be our God and Creator,” then we use it to curse each other—we who are created in the image of God. – James 3:8-9

“Dad, I have to tell you something,” my child said cautiously.

“Yes honey, what is it?”

“I…I know some bad words.”

I was interested to know what words he thought were bad, so we worked our way through the alphabet.

Afterwards he asked, “Why do kids say those words? I think they just want to sound like grown-ups.

But that’s not how grown-ups talk, right Dad?”

“That’s right, sweetie. I love you. Good night.”

I got a little misty, marking this childhood milestone of curse-word acquisition.

But it also made me think that I need to be more careful about what I say.

Honestly, I’m not too worried about the kind of “bad words” my child listed.

What I want him to learn is the power of words to affirm, encourage, and build up a person—and the power of words to demonize, dehumanize, and tear down.

I need to model that for my child.

This is where the author of James calls me out, and where my child’s question calls me in.

Years ago, a friend observed that I could seemingly “find something bad to say about anyone.”

It stung because it was true.

Being a parent makes me want to change that in myself so that I do not pass it on to my child.

If he hears me cutting down and tearing up others, how could he take me seriously when I chide him for gossiping or putting others down?

And how can he trust that my sweet words are sincere and that my bitter words won’t be directed at him?

Maybe I can’t tame my tongue completely, but for my child’s sake, I’ll watch my mouth!
Holy One, may the words of my mouth honor your presence in others.

Musings

written by Jennifer Brownell

As Jesus approached Jericho, a blind man was sitting by the roadside begging. When he heard a crowd going by, he asked what was happening. They told him, “Jesus of Nazareth is passing by.”Then he shouted, “Jesus, Son of David, have mercy on me!”Those who were in front sternly ordered him to be quiet; but he shouted even more loudly, “Son of David, have mercy on me!” – Luke 18:35-39

Sometimes, Depression sends a postcard ahead of his visits.

On one side, in fat and deceptively friendly script, the words: “Wish you were here!”

On the other side, scrawled in his recognizable handwriting, the simple words: “I’ll be there soon.”
Other times, Depression just lets himself in unannounced.

I find him one morning on the couch.

“Sit down,” he coaxes, “I brought chips. And there’s a Star Trek marathon on.”
Sometimes I think he must be right.

Surely there’s no better way to spend this day or this week or this month than couch, junk food, familiar television.
This time, though, I hear sounds outside.

Instead of settling, I stand.

I stick my head out the window to see what is going on.
Jesus is here. Right now. Passing by.
“Jesus, have mercy.”

I say it out loud and Depression turns his head, shushes me.
“Jesus! Have mercy!” I say it louder this time, open the door so I can really see them going by—a parade of hopeful, grieving, joyous, broken, kind-hearted people.
They are singing and dancing and they all have their eyes on the Healer who shines like a light in their midst, who is holding a hand out to me.

Then, they are all holding out their hands, and I take one step toward them and then another and then another.
And I leave the door open behind me, so Depression can let himself out.

Brother Christ, when we feel isolated by illness or grief, bring the healing presence of Your loving community right to us. Amen.

Musings

written by Dwight Lee Wolter

I lie awake; I am like a lonely bird on the housetop. – Psalm 102:7

It is not easy for some people, including me, to speak openly about loneliness, so they remain silently lonely for loved ones, friends, the good old days.

They keep loneliness to themselves as if it is shameful or contagious.

After all, loneliness has been declared an epidemic, a kind of spiritual virus that needs to be cured or avoided.

But loneliness remains.

The Bible is, in part, a testament of loneliness: a source of help, hope, and identification.

In the beginning, one might imagine, God was lonely and created humankind in God’s own image for companionship.

Many of us also want to see ourselves reflected in those we created.

Adam and Eve were likely lonely for Eden after their eviction, as are so many people today, longing for a safe and secure home.

Eve and Adam must have been lonely for their child.

Was Cain lonely for his brother?

I am lonely for my daughter who died quite young in a sudden and tragic way. My son is lonely for his sister.

Noah, afloat on a stinky boat, may have been lonely for his neighbors on whom he closed the gate.

Imagine the loneliness of Jesus on a cross saying, “Why have you forsaken me?”

The Bible befriends us in our loneliness so we may be companion to the loneliness in others.

Loneliness—and our response to it—can contribute to the making of a sturdy, welcoming home in a garden, an ark, a desert, a cross, and a human heart.

God of many holy names, thank you for all the blessings, including loneliness, embedded in almost everything. And thank you for accepting my friend request. Amen.

Musings

written by Talitha Arnold

Now the Lord said to Abram, “Go from your country and your kindred and your father’s house to the land that I will show you.” – Genesis 12:1

Each January, Pulitzer Prize winning columnist Mary Schmich invites her readers to pick a guiding word for the year.

She makes it that the word is not a resolution nor a goal, but simply a kind of touchstone for the 365 days ahead.

Mary’s readers often send her their words.

A class of fourth graders chose “kindness.”

For some high schoolers, their words ranged from “balance” and “self-acceptance”, to “wanderlust” and “ataraxia.”

(Mary said she had to look it up. I did, too.)

Ancient Abram’s word had to have been “go,” as in: “Go from your country and your kindred and your father’s house.”

Go from all that was familiar and comfortable.

But also “go” from that which no longer brought life.

Abram’s father Terah had died in that land and that house.

His journey was over.

Abram’s wasn’t.

“Go,” God said.

“Go.”

It’s not as long as other words and probably not as deep or profound.

Yet I want “go” to be my guiding word for the days ahead.

I’d like it to guide the congregation I serve, too, as we continue to figure out what it means to be the church—to be faithful—in this time.

“Go,” even if we don’t know where the journey will lead.

“Go,” even if we seldom see the way ahead.

“Go,” because we can trust the One who goes with us.
